The water is colder than they tell you. In Kansas the cold is a wind. It comes across the prairie with nothing to stop it. It gets into the bones. The Pacific is not a wind. The Pacific is a hand. It reaches through the wetsuit at the wrists and the ankles and the collar and it takes hold and it does not let go. Forty yards out, you understand that the cold here is alive. It is not weather. It is something deciding whether to keep you.

This is the story of the boy. It is also the story of every founder I have ever sat across from in twenty-four years of teaching and consulting. They were trained to play the land game. They walked into a market and discovered an ocean. They did what the boy did at first: they tried to apply effort. They paddled harder. They wrote longer business plans. They took more meetings. They worked weekends. The ocean did to them what it does to everyone who tries to muscle through it. It put them under. It rolled them. It sent the board back without them. Some of them got out and stayed out. Some of them, the ones I am writing for, got back in.
